3 Ways Your Mind Impacts Your Career Change Goals

Picture this: You see a hot job listing on a job board and instantly start imagining yourself quitting your current job over landing this one … your DREAM JOB. Now, what if I told you that your mind is actually what’s been getting in the way of you being in the ideal work situation you’ve been fantasizing over?

It’s true. Making up your mind that it’s time for a career change is only part of the battle.

The job search process can be intimidating and frustrating, to say the least. But the good news is, in order to WIN the battle and claim victory in landing your DREAM JOB, there are some little-known details about the mind that once understood can actually stop the intimidation and make the process a lot more approachable.

So, let’s explore three ways your mind impacts your career change goals —they just might make a big difference in your career search:

1.) Your mind does exactly – specifically – what it thinks you want it to do.

It’s always acting in your own interest. If you don’t have what want but you have behaviors that you also don’t want, then you are not collaborating with your mind or setting yourself up for success. So, focus on engaging in healthy behaviors related to your job search process. This includes daily goal setting, preparing for each call, and interview, to get the most out of your job search process.

2.) Your mind is hard wired to move you towards pleasure and away from pain.

Your mind is always looking to get you out of discomfort — away from pain. And, let’s face it, things like networking, posting on LinkedIn, and making cold calls, can all be uncomfortable (pain-inducing). So, if you want to stimulate your mind towards experiencing more pleasure in your job search process – get uncomfortable the right way. Instead of saying to yourself “I hate networking,” say “I love building relationships.” It’s as simple as changing how your mind perceives a situation.

3.) The way you feel about everything comes down to the pictures you see in your head and the words you say to yourself.

I work with a TON of clients — directors, VPs, and executives alike — who tend to see themselves in less than ideal situations before working with me. I’ve been told “I don’t have my MBA, SPHRM™, PMP® Certification” etc. as excuses for why people can’t land their dream job. Other excuses include “I’m too old” or even “I intimidate others.” Well let me tell you this, those are just excuses people tell themselves that are NOT TRUE. Start telling yourself three simple words “I am enough.” Because you ARE enough and if you’ve been in your industry working in upward-mobility roles as a director, VP, or executive you 100% deserve a position that aligns with your career goals.

All things considered, your mind loves what’s familiar. If you want to succeed at any level you have to make what’s unfamiliar – familiar. Tell your mind exactly what you want with powerful, positive words to get your dream job and you’ll see just how quickly your career goals can be achieved.
